Emily Hanratty neé Norgrove fought in City Hall during the Rising. The garrison surrendered on Tuesday 25 April and were interned in Ship Street Barracks which was close by.

The barracks were filthy and Dr Kathleen Lynn protested and demanded they be treated better.

We can’t stay in this place…with dustbins in it and it is filthy.

The room was cleaned up for them and the women, eight in all remained there for the rest of the week until after the surrender.

Emily Hanratty was a member of the women’s section of the Irish Citizen Army.
