“He Put A Rifle To My Back And Gave Me Ten Seconds”

On Easter Monday Liam Mellows ordered Volunteers Pádraig Ó Fathaigh and Tom O’Dea to go to Kinvara, south Galway and make contact with the local priest Fr. Meehan, and ask him to be Quartermaster to the Brigade.

On reaching Kinvara the men were unable to find Fr. Meehan. What they found was that the town was full of RIC constables. Ó Fathaigh and O’Dea were arrested and taken to the local RIC barracks. They weren’t held there for long as the police had received some disturbing news regarding the movement of the Volunteers.

The rebels have a machine gun outside every barrack in the county Galway.

On hearing this the barracks in Ardrahan, Kinvara, Togher and Peterswell were all quickly evacuated with the garrisons making their way to the bigger barracks in the town of Gort.

Pádraig Ó Fathaigh was a member of the Gort Company, Galway Brigade, Irish Volunteers.

Pádraigh Ó Fathaigh was interviewed for the programme 'The Rising in Galway' broadcast on Radio Éireann, 4 April 1966.
