Having spent the weekend in Old Bawn, Tallaght, Anne Jane Smith returned home on Easter Monday. While returning by bus to the city she overheard conversations with passengers talking about a commotion at Jacob’s Biscuit Factory. Anne Jane worked in Jacob’s at the time.
Getting off the bus in Terenure to catch the Rathfarnham tram she soon learned that the tram would never come as the Rising had begun in the city centre.
Heading home by foot she was met by her worried sister, who informed her of what was happening. At the time Anne Jane lived at the corner of Bishop Street and Bride Street. Ignoring her sister’s advice, Anne Jane continued on her journey. Despite having to find an alternative route she did succeed in getting to New Bride Street.
I never heard a shot in my life until then. Neither did I know what a rebellion was.
Anne Jane Smith was interviewed for the television programme 'Newsbeat', broadcast on 26 March 1971.
