Michael Carey, a constable with the Dublin Metropolitan Police, was at the races in Fairyhouse on Easter Monday. On hearing that the Rising was taking place he travelled back to Dublin. At Finglas he was stopped by Irish Volunteers and taken before Thomas Ashe, Commandant of the 5th Battalion, Dublin Brigade, who ordered that a group of Volunteers escort Carey into “British territory”.
At Mountjoy Police Station Michael Carey and his colleague Constable Cronin were ordered to close all the public houses in the area and to remove the Proclamations that had been posted on hoardings.
