“There Was All Sorts Of People Came To That House That Night”

Liam O Briain talks about how he received word from Arthur Griffith to go to Dr.O’Kelly’s house in Rathgar on the night of Holy Saturday. When he got there he found Griffith, Eoin MacNeill and a number of others discussing MacNeill’s plan to cancel the manoeuvres for Easter Sunday. O’Briain recalls that Arthur Griffith.

Supported MacNeill fully in his resolve to cancel the maneouvres the next day.

O Briain was one of a number of men chosen to deliver MacNeill’s order to the Volunteers around the country.

While returning home that night O Briain asked Griffith what had happened and he informed him of the plans for the Rising. The next day, Easter Sunday, O Briain travelled to Edenderry, Tyrellspass, Tullamore and Drumraney to deliver the countermanding order.

Liam O Brian was a member of ‘F’ Company, 1st Battalion, Irish Volunteers.
