Mattie Connolly and his sister Katie fought in City Hall under the command of their older brother Sean. Two other members of the Connolly family, Eddie and George were in an outpost in Parliament Street. Sean Connolly was killed soon after the Rising began. Mattie and Katie were arrested after the garrison surrendered on Tuesday and were held in Ship Street Barracks for one week before being transferred to Richmond Barracks.
Recalling his internment, Mattie stated that at first they were not treated very well by the soldiers.
We had one meal a day for the first week consisting of two and a half biscuits and a cup of black tea.
Mattie Connolly was a member of the Irish Citizen Army.
