The RCSI was taken over on Easter Monday by a small contingent of the Citizen Army garrison from St Stephen’s Green, led by Countess Markievicz. However, when heavy machine gun fire from the Shelbourne Hotel forced the rebels in Stephen’s Green to withdraw from their positions, they took shelter in the College.
Barricades were built with books from the library, the College Hall became sleeping quarters, porridge was cooked on a classroom fire, and a mortuary was set up under the seats of the Chemistry Theatre.
The garrison also broke through walls dividing the houses northward to Grafton Street and southwards to Cuffe Street, to enable safer transportation of food and supplies. On Easter Monday the College will host some of our RTÉ Radio broadcasts and a range of talks on topics including The Women of the College of Surgeons Garrison, Margaret Skinnider, the St. Stephen’s Green trenches, and assisting the casualties.
All events free but ticketed.
