Peter Carpenter was among the group detailed to occupy the Metropole Hotel, under the command of Oscar Traynor.

One of the party, a German, was a chef who had applied to the Metropole for a job some weeks earlier but was told by the hotel manager to join the (British) Army. On seeing the manager when he entered the hotel, the German took great delight in telling him that he had indeed taken his advice and joined the army, the Citizen Army and now he was getting five minutes to do the same.

Peter Carpenter was a member of the Irish Citizen Army.
