“Behind Me Came A Sound Of A Volley And I Fell”

Margaret Skinnider was a member of the Stephen’s Green/College of Surgeons garrison. On Thursday 27 April, she was part of a group sent by Commandant Michael Mallin to set fire to the Russell Hotel in order to dislodge a British machine gun post in the University Church.  As they approached the party were fired on by soldiers in a building on Harcourt Street and Skinnider was wounded.

I was found to have three bullet wounds, one a quarter of an inch from my spine.

Fred Ryan of the Irish Citizen Army was killed.

Margaret Skinnider was a member of the Glasgow Branch, Cumann na mBan and was attached to the Irish Citizen Army during the Rising.

Margaret Skinnider was interviewed for 'Donncha's Sunday: Women of the 1916 Rising' broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1, 27 April 1986. Photograph of the Russell Hotel, Harcourt Street courtesy of Military Archives.
