The First Casualties of 1916 preceded Easter Monday and occurred a long way from the centre of action in Dublin. A high level operation directed by Michael Collins and Joseph Plunkett, to seize wireless equipment in Cahirciveen, ended prematurely in a tragic drowning accident in the river Laune at Ballykissane near Kilorglin, Co Kerry. The ambitious plan to provide a communication link between Roger Casement, Austin Stack and the Aud, with the objective of arming a national uprising may have been ill-fated from the outset, but the loss of three key volunteers – Con Keating, Donal Sheehan, Charles Monaghan – effectively ended the hope of support for the Rising from overseas.
